Garage Sale Days
Today was my inaugural attempt at running a garage sale. Am moving in 2 weeks, so we want to get rid of nearly everything to reduce the hassle of hauling it around. After looking at the items we've been collecting for the last few years, I've realized we have a lot of shitty stuff. Since we were in school, we felt we needed to take every free or cheap piece of furniture that was offered to us. As a result, there are numerous chairs, two desks, a couch, TV's, TV stands, and two dressers: All of them shitty. I'm almost embarrassed to sell them, especially for the exorbitant asking prices. I know I’d never make a good used car salesman because I feel guilty about trying to sling so many poor quality items. I guess that is the nature of a garage sale.
I don't have a lot of experience with garage sales. Went to a few in college to pick up cheap household items, a lot of which are being sold in my garage sales. They have become even cheaper and shittier in the years since I bought them. The thing I didn't realize is that there is a whole subculture of garage sale goers. They seem to be a group of people who go to garage sales for the sake of it and to collect odd and useless items. You can tell who they are because they arrive 1/2 hour before the advertised starting time and can quickly figure if the items are shitty (like ours). The hardcores quickly scanned through and left. It wasn't until later in the day, when the average Joes show up, that we started selling things.
I will never buy used furniture again. As I was carrying out the couch, I noticed it smelled like stale cigarette smoke. Neither of us smokes, and we've had the thing for four years. Disgusting.

Another man's trash . . . .
I'm thinking about having a garage sale myself. Every time I have one I say it is going to be my last. Then the following year arrives and my house is over run with more trash or I want a little extra money for something special. Not to mention all the things the kids go through.
How did you do in your sales? Was it worth the hassles? Setting up for the sale is always more difficult than the day(s) anyway!
Not as well as expected, but the sale is working out fine. I'm more interested in getting rid of junk than making money. Alright, that's not true.

That's okay . . . money is always fun.
Oh, and good luck with the move!
Wow, that is funny. I use to be a serious garage sailor. I didnt show up early but could always recognize a bargin and just someone else's junk. I live close enough to the US/Mexico border though, that there are literally plenty of Mexicans willing to buy a crap load of junk at a cheap price and put it in the back of their trucks or vans and take it back to Mexico to sell it.
To bad I don't live near the Mexican border; We might have sold more stuff. Live close enough to the Canadien border. If any Canucks came to the garage sale, they weren't that interested either. Looks like I'll be making a trip to the dump.

Hi ##NAME##. Hope you are well. I came across your site totally by accident. In fact it wasn't exactly on a topic I was looking for (I was on the lookout for used truck sales info). But as I was searching, one link led me to another and I got curious about your blog. I found it interesting and thought I'd drop you a line to tell you so. I guess thats what surfing is all about.
