Cycling Expert

I decided I'm not that excited about the upcoming Olympics. I don't think we as Americans get the same thrill from victory as other nations mainly because we expect to win everything. If we do win, it’s not exciting because we were supposed to. It’s even worse if we lose because the other nations get such a kick out of beating us. I was watching an exhibition game between the U.S. basketball team, full of NBA superstars, and Italy's national team. Italy beat the piss out of us, and you would have thought they won WWII.

The other night on "
Real Time with Bill Maher" he was discussing American reaction to the Tour De France. He basically said that rooting for Lance Armstrong doesn't make you a cycling expert, it just means you like it when Americans beat foreigners. He’s right; I do like it when Americans beat foreigners. However, the reason we like it so much is because cycling is an international sport and Americans aren’t necessarily supposed to win. When we do win, we can claim ourselves as the underdogs and say Americans just work harder and have more heart than the rest of the world. I do believe Americans have larger hearts, but that’s due to a high fatty diet. The problem is that the sports in which we are underdogs are fairly limited. Unless the U.S. wins the World Cup, I don’t think we will every experience anything like the U.S. hockey team in 1980.

As is, we have to be content with winning. We also have to grin and bear it when another nation’s athlete or team beats ours and they declare a national holiday.

Yep, I agree, it seems like the Olympics have sort of fallen off the map. Don't they start pretty soon? You would think there would be more hoopla and excitement about them. Remember good ol' Mary Lou Retton from way back in the day? That is probably my clearest memory of the Olympics. I'm hoping that once they actually get under way I'll get sucked into them.

I think this lack of attention they're receiving is due to a number of factors including the current political conventions happening in the States and the Iraq mess. Too much going on right now.

Here is sport for NBC to get everyone jacked up about the Olympics, Midget Tossing!!! What look what it has done for Foxs' ratings. And don't tell me they are above it either. If they thought they could steal people from watching an episode of Saliva Slut Swapping MoM's, then they would be throwing midgets through those lit up rings at the beginning ceremony.
